What is a crown?
A crown is a very strong ‘cap’ or covering for your tooth. It can be made out of ceramic or metal and protects the tooth from breakage. It looks and feels just like a brand new tooth! We have all our crowns made with a local technician who work to the highest standard. Crowns are made out of a very strong and durable material and are made to exactly fit your tooth, they can last much longer than fillings – between 20-25 years.
Why do I need a crown?
There are a few reasons that a crown may be recommended:
- to restore a tooth that has been heavily broken down by decay.
- to protect a tooth that may have cracked
- to support a bridge
- to protect a tooth that had a very large filling
- to seal and protect a tooth after a root canal treatment
- to improve discoloured or uneven teeth
What’s involved in having a crown?
Having a tooth prepared for a crown is similar to having a filling done. The area is anaesthetised so you are comfortable, and the tooth is polished to accommodate the ceramic of the crown. Then, a scan or impression of you tooth is sent to our local laboratory to be made. You may be asked to go to the lab for their expert technicians can check the shade, to make sure your new crown blends in seamlessly. A temporary crown is placed so you should not have any discomfort between the appointments. Then two weeks later we get you back to fit your beautiful new tooth!
How much will it cost?
Depending on the material that crown is made from, a crown can cost between $1000-$1600 before any health fund rebate.
We use the latest digital technology to make your crown appointment as comfortable as possible.
