What is the TMJ?
The joint between our jaw and our skull is called the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This joint can make all sorts of clicks and creaks. But sometimes these sounds can be associated with pain and discomfort, this is called temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). The causes of TMD can be multifactorial and related to both anatomical and psychological issues. TMD may also be related to the relationship of the teeth in the jaw. Often, jaw issues manifest in wear of the teeth from bruxism or grinding. Grinding the teeth can lead to a range of panful issues including sensitivity and cracked teeth.
What can we do about TMD?
Our gentle dentists always conduct a jaw examination and collect a thorough history to reveal the existence and extent of any TMD. Treatment options for TMD may include splint therapy or orthodontic treatment. In addition to these treatment modalities, many patients find relief in physiotherapy, acupuncture or chiropractic.
We look forward to helping you feel and look your best!
